The annual ETB Cross-Country was held in Black Island on Thursday last. There were various age groups – Minor, Junior, Intermediate and senior boys and the same age categories also applies to the girls events. The Coláiste Oiriall Minor Boys were the first race of the day and Anann O Conchur was first home on the day to take an individual gold medal. He was followed closely by Leon O Maolagáin Mac Cába who was piped at the post for second place and had to contend with the bronze medal.
The Minor Boys’ team of Colm O Ruanaidh, Jamie Mac Cearain, Seán Mac CIonna, Darragh O hAmaill, Anann O Conchur, Leon O Maolagán Mac Cába, Kai Mac Gafraidh and Orán O Caoláin were awarded silver in the team placings.
The Coláiste Oiriall Minor Girls was the next race and the mile long race was becoming increasingly difficult with the standard of the underfoot conditions deteriorating with the heavy rain. Helen Ni Fhailigh took an individual silver medal in this race and the team won gold in the overall standings. The team was made up of 6 runners with the best 4 scores to count. After a fall from one runner on the starting line on the bridge and a pile up of bodies as a result, it was a major feat that these girls finished the race. Laura Ní Fhailigh had taken a bad fall and waited until the race was completed to nurse her injuries. The team consisted of Helen Ni Fhailigh (2), Sorcha Ni Néill (4), Aisling Ni Ghallchóir (6), Marie Louise Nic Aodha (7), Laura Ni Fhailgh (8) and Rebecca Nic Cionna.
Conor O Dughaill was rewarded with an individual bronze medal in the Junior Boys event. He had lead for most of the race but the increased distance to 2 miles proved too much on the final bend.
The Coláiste Oiriall Junior Girls were silver medal recipients in the team event. The runners on this team were Jessica Ní Chorragáin (17), Casey Jane Ni Eilí (9), Róisín Ni hAmaill (8), Karen Ni Fhionnagáin Ní Mhanáis (6) and Blaithín Ni Dhulain (13).
The final team in action for Coláiste Oiriall on the day was the Girls’ Intermediate team. Celine Ni Fhailigh and Hannah Ni Sceachain were placed second and third respectively and the team, which also included Aoife Ni Roideain, Katie Ni Chléire, Eimear Nic Cionna and Kate Ni Eachaidh, were gold medalists in the team event.
The Intermediate boys of Darragh O Tuathail, Ruairí Mac Cionna, Darren O Dufaigh, Maitiú O Ruaidhe and Oisín O Muirí Ó Tuathaigh were short team members on the day and despite some good individual performances in the 3 mile run they were not eligible for a team placing as 6 runners did not complete the race.
