A capacity audience recognised talent, effort and ability at the annual Coláiste Oiriall Prize Giving Ceremony which was held in the Garage Theatre last Wednesday. A plethora of medals, certificates and trophies were awarded to students to re-affirm them in good practice.

Niamh Ní Shearraigh received the Principal’s Award. Emily Ní Bhraonáin received the Junior Student of the Year award and Corn Cuimhneacháin Sheáin Mhic Chionna while Hannah Nic Sceacháin received the Sports Star of the Year award and Corn Cuimhneacháin Thomáis Mhic Ghabhainn. Cait Ní Dhomhnaill received the overall Writer of the Year award, Buanchorn Phádraig Uí Bhaoighill.

An abundance of other awards were presented in basketball, Gaelic football, athletics, soccer, attendance, Most Enthusiastic Irish Speakers, Literary Competitions, Students of the Year in 1st, 2nd 3rd and 5th Years, Gaeltacht and Stagewise scholarships and Best Students in Individual Subjects. The school choir and the Senior Traditional Group also participated in the Awards’ Ceremony.

In his address, Príomhoide, Brendan Ó Dufaigh wished the 3rd Year and the 6th Year students well in the state examinations, He complimented all the students who were nominated and who won awards. He said that the school had fittingly marked the outstanding achievements of students in academic attainment, sport and extra-curricular activities and that they acknowledged the contribution of many students in promoting and enriching Coláiste Oiriall. He said that there were many other victories and achievements recorded in Coláiste Oiriall during the year and he briefly referred to some of them. The Príomhoide concluded by again congratulating Cathal de Paor, a worthy recipient of the Student of the Year Award (Gradam Mhac Léinn na Bliana).

Laoch Spóirt na Bliana – Hannah Nic Sceacháin was named Overall Sports Person of the Year. Hannah has played basketball and football throughout her six years in Coláiste Oiriall and was joint-captain of the under 19B Girls in the Schools’ Cup and was one of four from the school nominated to go forward for Ulster All-Star trials. She has excelled at basketball, football, athletics and cross country. She was dedicated to training and proved to be a leader on the field, track and court. Hannah is also very involved in sport outside of the school and is a stalwart on the Clontibret football and camogie teams.

Former inter-county player and 2011 All-Star and starting member of the 2013 Monaghan senior All-Ireland final senior team, Therese McNally Scott, from the Emyvale club, presented the under 16 and under 19 Ulster champions with their medals. Coláiste Oiriall are Ulster B Girls’ champions at under 16 and at under 19 levels.
