Coláiste Oiriall Success in Poetry Aloud Competition

Coláiste Oiriall have provided five of the nine contestants who won through the regional heat of the local Poetry Aloud competition to take part in the all-Ireland semi-finals in the National Library in Dublin on Friday, 25th November. A further seven students received “Highly Commended”. Aoife Ní Láithimh was successful in the senior section.
Coláiste Oiriall Read-a-thon collects over €1,000 for MS
First and second year students in Coláiste Oiriall have collected a staggering €1,094 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland through the annual Read-a-thon. Students in rang Lorna, Lorcan, Muiris, Maitiú and Muireann read 241 between them within a few weeks. The annual MS Read-a-thon aims to highlight the effects of Multiple Sclerosis while raising much needed funds.

Coláiste Oiriall girls were first in the third and fourth year division at the Athletics Association Ireland Cross Country Championship, hosted by the Monaghan branch in Killmore yesterday. First place in this 1,500 metre race went to Dervla Fowler, second place went to Sarah Ní Fhailigh,
Psychotherapist addresses Parents’ Association function

Margaret Curran, a Cognitive Behaviour Psychotherapist from Dromconrath, Co. Meath addressed the parent body of Coláiste Oiriall in the school on Tuesday night. The talk, which was organised by the Parents’ Association, was entitled “Parenting and triggers that can escalate challenges with children/teenagers and cause undue friction”.
Aoife represents Coláiste Oiriall
Aoife Ní Láithimh, a fifth year student in Coláiste Oiriall, will represent the school in the All-Ireland final of the Poetry Aloud competition tomorrow in the National Library. She has already won through the regional heat and the all-Ireland semi-final to secure her place in tomorrow’s event. The prescribed poems will be “The Violet Maker” by Medbh Mc Guckian, “His I’s are empty” by Rita Ann Higgins and “A Constable Calls” by Seamus Heaney.

Coláiste Oiriall Under 16 Girls’ Basketball team victorious in North East Regional Final – Comhghairdeas leo!
Congratulations to the Coláiste Oiriall under 16 Girls’ Basketball team who won the Basketball Ireland North East Regional Final which was played in the Phoenix Centre, Carrickmacross today with the narrowest of margins. The final score was Coláiste Oiriall 40 points and Beech Hill College 39 points.
TY Love the Subh

Deirdre Nic Canna, Turlough Ó Cleircín, Jessica Ní Dhruacháin, Thomas Ó Muineach and Loinnir Ní Dhonnghaile are some of the Transition Year students from Coláiste Oiriall, who sold all their produce ‘Love the Subh’ jam within three hours at their stall in Church Square, Monaghan, as part of the Taste of Monaghan festival.
J.P. McManus Scholarship for former student

Donna Marie Ní Mhuireagáin was awarded a third level scholarship in recognition of her academic performance in the Leaving Certificate examination. The scholarship scheme, funded by the trustees of the J.P. McManus charitable foundation, provides significant financial assistance to top performing students throughout their undergraduate studies.

Third Level Scholarship awarded to former student

Conchur Mac Aoidh, former student in Coláiste Oiriall was awarded a UCD Bord na Gaeilge Scholarhship at the Entrance Scholars’ Ceremony in the O’Reilly Hall, UCD, Belfield in November and was accompanied by his mother, Grace Maloney and school Principal, Brendan Ó Dufaigh.
Irish Subject Inspection
An Irish subject inspection was undertaken by cigire Oilibhear de Búrca on behalf of the Department of Education in April 2010. The report was published in December 2010 and now appears on the Department’s website www.education.ie.
The report is very positive, stating that the planning work presented was of high quality, that the quality of teaching and learning was very high in all of the five lessons observed, that good use as made of ICT resources and that good attention was paid to assessment of all the language skills.
Boys’ Basketball teams book places in Regional Finals

Big Knit In
Rang Grainne students in Coláiste Oiriall participated in the Innocent Smoothie sponsored Big Knit in aid of Action Ireland as part of their CSPE project. Innocent Smoothie hope to get 80,000 miniature hats knitted for their bottles and have pledged 25c per bottle to the charity.
